Reason Rally 2012

Image
On March 24, 2012, a rally celebrating "science, reason, and secularism" will be held in Washington D.C. According to the "About" page on the official website, the event, titled Reason Rally, "seeks to to unify, energize, and embolden secular people nationwide, while dispelling the negative opinions held by so much of American society... It will be the largest secular event in world history... The purpose of this particular rally will be to advance secularism (in the broadest sense of the word) in society." There is a lot of hype about this event on the secularist side. And rightly so; key speakers include Richard Dawkins (who refused to debate William Lane Craig ), Dan Brown, Lawrence Krauss (who, unlike Dawkins, actually  debated Dr. Craig last year ), David Silverman, and PZ Myers among others -- some of today's leading atheists and secularists. You can go to the official Reason Rally website for more information: www.ReasonRally.com . Fo...

Evolutionary Biology and Atheism

Image
I am currently reading Darwin's Black Box by biochemist and evolutionist Michael J. Behe. As an evolutionist, he talks about the biochemical challenges that Darwinian evolution presents to the question of origins -- how it doesn't allow for the irreducible complexity that we observe in biology. Therefore, I found it interesting that I stumbled upon this quote today: an evolutionist's view on what evolutionary biology tells us about our world... “Let me summarize my views on what modern evolutionary biology tells us loud and clear — and these are basically Darwin’s views. There are no gods, no purposes, and no goal-directed forces of any kind. There is no life after death. When I die, I am absolutely certain that I am going to be dead. That’s the end of me. There is no ultimate foundation for ethics, no ultimate meaning in life, and no free will for humans, either. “ ~ Evolutionist William Provine of Cornell University, in a debate with Phillip E. Johnson Have you no...

Quote of the Week: Ravi Zacharias On The Problem of Evil

Image
"When you say there's too much evil in this world you assume there's good. When you assume there's good, you assume there's such a thing as a moral law on the basis of which to differentiate between good and evil. But if you assume a moral law, you must posit a moral Law Giver, but that's Who you're trying to disprove and not prove. Because if there's no moral Law Giver, there's no moral law. If there's no moral law, there's no good. If there's no good, there's no evil. What is your question?" ~ Ravi Zacharias, in response to the objection, "There cannot be a God, because there is too much evil in this world"

Food For Thought: Darwin On God and the Universe

I found an old biography about Charles Darwin at a rummage sale a while back. I wasn't very interested in it, since it was mostly information that I had already heard, and it was told in a rather uninteresting way. This morning, I was wondering what it was still doing on my bookshelf. As I began to flip through it, this statement caught my attention (but it's really not that surprising considering that Darwin was once attending seminary to be a minister): "Another source of conviction in the existence of God, connected with the reason and not with the feelings, impressed me as having much more weight. This follows from the extreme difficulty or rather impossibility of conceiving this immense and wonderful universe, including man with his capacity for looking far backwards and far into futurity, as the result of blind chance or necessity. When thus reflecting I feel compelled to look to a First Cause having an intelligent mind in some degree analogous to that of man; and ...

Yearly Tradition: My Favorite Christmas Songs

Image
Every year I have a tradition for this blog: I post my favorite Christmas songs for your listening enjoyment! :) This year, I have added a few new songs to the original list . Enjoy, and Merry Christmas! This first one is from an Oregon-based band called Sixteen Cities. My family has traveled through rain, sleet, snow and "dark of night" (no joke) to see these guys in concert more than once and we were not disappointed; the worship is phenomenal and they are such genuine, Godly people. This song is called "Morningstar." I stumbled upon this next song by accident, but I instantly loved it. Sung by Francesca Battistelli, this gorgeous song is called "Be Born In Me." And lastly, this one is from Aaron Shust's Christmas EP . It's entitled "God Has Come To Earth." I'm pretty excited about this one, because I made the video myself... enjoy! Merry Christmas from the DCFblog!

Atheists, Santa Claus, and CHRIST-mas?

Image
The American Humanist Association has once again embarked on a campaign to place ads in strategic locations for the holidays. This time around, they have two themes, one of which shows Santa Claus checking his list for naughty and nice with a message that reads "Bias Against Atheists Is Naughty, Not Nice." Here is the reasoning behind the billboards , according to the AHA: "Humanists get their knowledge from science rather than ancient texts and divine revelations," Speckhardt said. "This is the first time we've called out those prejudiced against us to rethink that prejudice. I hope people take them to heart and treat everyone as equally as they can this holiday season."   Now, while the AHA claims they are not undertaking this campaign to offend anyone or spoil "holiday" cheer, I do have my suspicions... especially if they are going to accuse Christians of simply believing "ancient texts and divine revelations" which supposed...
