Dissecting the Christmas Story: Part 1

Image
In reading the Gospels I have become increasingly fascinated with the names, places, dates, and history of the world surrounding Jesus. While I am by no means a historian or a scholar, for Christmas this year I wanted to put forth some interesting facts (a dissecting of the Gospel accounts) surrounding the birth of Christ. Luke's Gospel is the best place to start for he says that, "having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first," he is writing "an orderly account." That is, Luke was painstakingly accurate -- down to the most minute detail, as one scholar says. Adam Clark's Commentary says this of Luke's accuracy: Having accurately traced up-entered into the very spirit of the work, and examined every thing to the bottom; in consequence of which investigation, I am completely convinced of the truth of the whole. Though God gives his Holy Spirit to all them who ask him, yet this gift was never designed to set aside the use of tho...

The Resurrection, the Cross, and Trusting Jesus: 3 free ebooks

If you haven't noticed, this blog has been on an extended hiatus.... I don't know how many of my readers are still here in this corner of the Internet, but I wanted to let you know that I am still here. Life has been a rollercoaster ride of the good, the bad, and... the busy. :) And while I do have some ideas for content for this blog,  the time to write it out has been challenging. But on to the point of this post.... we all like freebies, right? And if you're a bookworm like me, you LOVE free books!! I recently received a kindle fire and I've been searching for free books to upload to it. Some of  the books have been worthwhile, but I particularly love it when they are apologetics related. Below are three such books -- for free ( for a limited time; please be sure that the price is still listed as free before purchasing) ! Did the Resurrection Happen... Really?  by Josh McDowell and Dave Sterrett The Coffee House Chronicles are short, easily devoured novella...

The New Tolerance

Image
I haven't posted in a while so while I work on articles and sort out some other apologetics business, I thought I would show you what came in my mailbox this evening: It's the last book from my Easter pack (which I was able to pick out myself), "The New Tolerance," signed by apologists Josh McDowell! Here's a quick synopsis of the book: In The New Tolerance , Josh McDowell and Bob Hostetler unmask the true nature of a cultural movement of "tolerance," as well as its dangerous agenda. This book will not only help you to understand the modern doctrine of tolerance but equip you to counter its insidious effects on your faith and your children... I do plan to write a review of the book and post some articles on this topic in the future, but for now, check out this one by Christopher Copan Scott (son of  professor of Philosophy, author, and speaker   Paul Copan ) entitled "Toward a Substantive Understanding of Tolerance."   “Tolerance ...

Friday Apologetics Finds: Easter Edition ~and a GIVEAWAY! (closed)~

Image
Here are this weeks apologetics finds (on Saturday, this time)... Since Resurrection Sunday, commonly known as Easter, is tomorrow, this week's theme is on the Resurrection. Check out these links, and be sure to check out my FIRST giveaway at the bottom of this post! Happy Resurrection Sunday! If one does away with the fact of the Resurrection, one also does away with the Cross, for both stand and fall together, and one would then have to find a new center for the whole message of the gospel. - Hans Urs von Balthasar 1) Confident Christianity has compiled a small list of resources on the Resurrection; you can check it out here . The website also has a post on the Day of Discovery's series titled "What Jesus Said About the Resurrection." 2) Lee Strobel talks about how the Resurrection impacted his life  as an atheist; it's actually a follow up to Ricky Gervais' Easter Message. This article is based primarily on an interview which Apologetics 315 did ...

Book Review: The Unshakable Truth

Image
When I first heard about the book The Unshakable Truth: How Can Experience the 12 Essentials of A Relevant Faith by Josh and Sean McDowell, I knew I had to get it. The description on the back cover reads, “A watershed book for every believer wanting to deepen their faith and reveal Christ’s power and relevance to those around them.” While I really liked the book, it was not what I was expecting, in more ways then one. Here is the product description: The name Josh McDowell promises real-life, on-the-street Christian apologetics. McDowell, along with his son, Sean, draws on a lifetime of work to create this comprehensive handbook on what Christians believe, why they believe it, how it is relevant to life, and how they can pass it on to the next generation. The Unshakable Truth is uniquely positioned in the way it presents apologetics relationally, focusing on how right believing affects not only believers but also the people they encounter. The authors help readers… · understa...
